Fundamentals into
Style
Every art style — anime, semi-realism, ARPG concept art — is the same handful of dials, turned to different settings. This roadmap builds the dials first, then walks the same character through three of them: Semi-Realism, Classic Anime, and ARPG-Style.

The Practice Rhythm & Checklist
The engine of your entire art career. The Phases below are just the road you are driving on. You need to see this routine every single time you open the document.
10–15 Minutes Total
The minimum viable day. Pure muscle memory and spatial warm-up. No high-level thinking.
- 1. The Primitive Tumbler (5 mins): Draw 5 boxes and 3 cylinders spinning in random directions. Draw through them. This calibrates your brain to 3D space immediately.
- 2. Structural Gesture (5-7 mins): 5-10 quick poses (30-60s each). But instead of just stick-figure lines, force yourself to draw the ribcage as an egg/box and the pelvis as a bucket. Capture flow and volume.
- 3. Mental Analysis (2 mins): Look at an object in the room. Identify the light source, the core shadow, and the contact shadow. No drawing required.
1 to 2 hours
Your baseline routine. You focus heavily on whichever Sub-Phase (1A, 1B, etc.) you are currently in. Focus is power.
- Warm-up (10-15 mins): Execute "The Floor."
- Targeted Phase Study (45-60 mins): If you are in Phase 1A, you drill perspective and intersections. If you are in 1C, you do Loomis heads. You do not mix them.
- Thumbnailing (10 mins): Attached to any finished piece you plan to do.
- Error Verification (10 mins): Crucial. Taking the red pen and correcting your own work using references or 3D models.
When energy allows
- Full Rendered Piece (1x/wk): Pushing a piece as far as you can using your current skillset.
- Deconstruction / Master Study (Weekly): Reverse-engineering an artist you admire (Bridge work).
- External Critique: Getting new eyes on your structural blind spots.
Fundamentals
The dial stays pinned at pure realism here. You're building the ground truth every later stylization will bend away from.
Spatial Architecture (Line, Form, & Perspective)
Core concept: Reprogramming your brain from 2D copying to 3D simulation. Everything is boxes, cylinders, and spheres.
Study targets
- Line confidence (Ghosting strokes, drawing from the shoulder).
- Drawing 3D primitives (boxes, cylinders, spheres) at extreme angles without grids.
- Drawing through forms (the "glass" box method).
- Form intersections (a cylinder cleanly piercing a box).
The Physics of Light (Values & Form)
Core concept: Light does not care about anatomy; it only cares about planes. We learn light on basic shapes before applying it to complex human faces.
Study targets
- The 5 Elements of Light: Highlight, Center Light, Halftone, Core Shadow, Reflected Light.
- Cast Shadows vs. Form Shadows.
- Ambient Occlusion (contact shadows).
- Edge Control Intro: Hard edges for cast shadows, firm edges for tight form changes, soft edges for round forms.
The Human Engine (Anatomy & Gesture)
Core concept: Applying 1A and 1B to the human body. The body is just a complex arrangement of primitives.
Study targets
- Gesture drawing (capturing the energy/flow).
- Mannequinization (building the torso as a box/bean, limbs as cylinders).
- Major skeletal landmarks (clavicle, sternum, ribcage, pelvis).
- Loomis / Reilly head construction.
The Color Matrix (Color Theory)
Core concept: Value does all the work, color gets all the credit. Color is just an emotional filter over Phase 1B.
Study targets
- Color temperature (Warm light = cool shadows, cool light = warm shadows).
- Subsurface scattering (light glowing through skin).
- Limited palette studies.
The Frame (Composition & Design)
Core concept: A technically perfect drawing with poor composition still fails as an image. Now that you can build forms, light them, and color them, you must learn how to arrange them to control the viewer's eye.
Study targets
- Focal point control via contrast (highest value contrast = focal point).
- Rule of thirds / dynamic symmetry as starting tools.
- Silhouette readability (the subject must read correctly as a flat black shape).
- Thumbnailing with intent: doing 5 tiny value layouts before starting a piece.
Studies, Not Fanart
Before touching semi-realism specifically, run a deconstruction study routine:
- Pick 8–10 semi-realistic pieces you admire (concept art, book covers, character illustrations)
- For each, spend 15–20 min asking: what's the value range? How stylized are the proportions vs. true anatomy? What's the line philosophy? How is texture handled?
- Do 2–3 direct copy studies (not for posting — for muscle memory) of pieces you analyzed
Portfolio Piece #1 — The Anchor
Pick one character or subject and render it in Semi-Realism, from imagination, holding up structurally against real reference. This becomes the anchor image the rest of your style range compares against — keep the pose, angle, and subject simple enough to redraw twice more later.
Semi-Realism Specifics
Real proportions and real light logic, plus selective stylization in specific spots — usually eyes, line simplification, and skin rendering smoothness. The dial moves, but not by much.
Rough orientation: often another 3–6 months at a similar pace — faster if Phase 1's gates are solid, slower if you're still leaning on reference to construct things Phase 1 was meant to make automatic.
The "Semi-Real Dial Settings"
Compared to full realism, semi-realism typically:
- Slightly enlarges/idealizes eyes (5–15% larger than true anatomy — not anime-level)
- Smooths skin texture while keeping correct underlying bone/muscle structure
- Simplifies hair into larger clumps/shapes rather than rendering every strand
- Uses clean or semi-clean edges — less atmospheric softness than photorealism, more shape clarity
- Keeps proportions anatomically correct — the #1 differentiator from anime/stylized work
Rendering Technique
Study targets
- Skin rendering: soft blending transitions between value zones, avoiding hard cel-shading edges
- Eye rendering — the single highest-impact area: iris structure, catchlight placement, sclera shading
- Hair rendering: 3–5 major clump masses with directional strokes, not individual strands
- Edge control: hard edges at focal points/overlaps, soft edges on receding forms
From Reference to Imagination
Study targets
- Studies from photo reference — roughly 30–50 heads as a rough sense of "enough reps," not a hard gate. The point is that imagination work stops being guesswork; if you feel ready sooner, start sooner
- "Frankenstein" studies — combining features from multiple references into one coherent face
- From-imagination attempts, checked against reference afterward to diagnose errors
Contrast Study: Semi-Real → Anime
Same method as Bridge 1, new comparison set. Anime isn't semi-realism with bigger eyes tacked on — several dials move at once, and the point of this bridge is seeing them move individually instead of blending them by accident.
- Pick 5–8 reference pairs — a semi-realistic take and a classic anime take of a similar subject or archetype
- For each pair, ask: how much did the eye-to-face ratio jump? What happened to the nose and mouth? Is line doing more of the structural work now, instead of shading? Did rendering flatten from blended zones into hard cel blocks?
- Do 2–3 direct copy studies in the anime column specifically — your hand needs to feel the difference in line confidence, not just see it
Portfolio Piece #2 — The Same Subject, Redrawn
Take the subject from Portfolio Piece #1 and redraw it in Classic Anime. Match the pose and angle if you want a clean side-by-side later. This is where "one character, three styles" starts becoming a real portfolio piece instead of a study exercise.
Classic Anime
The biggest single jump on the gauge so far. Proportions exaggerate hard, and line starts doing structural work that shading used to do. Real anatomy is still the skeleton underneath — it's just far more visibly bent.
Rough orientation: often 3–6 months, but expect it to feel slower at first — you're partly un-learning semi-realism's rendering habits, not just adding new ones.
The "Anime Dial Settings"
Compared to semi-realism, classic anime typically:
- Pushes eye-to-face ratio far past semi-realism's 5–15% — often 30%+ larger, and treated as a major design element, not a subtle tweak
- Reduces the nose to a dot, line, or small shadow shape, and the mouth to a simple line or small curve
- Flattens facial planes — less subtle terrain, more clean geometric shape relationships
- Treats hair as bold, exaggerated design shapes (spikes, flowing sheets) rather than a simplified version of real hair volume
- Shifts core structural work from shading onto line — confident, varied-weight lineart is the form now, not just its edge
Rendering Technique
Study targets
- Cel-shading: 2–3 flat tone blocks per form instead of semi-realism's blended value zones
- Line weight variation — thicker on outer silhouette and overlaps, thinner on interior detail, to fake depth without extra shading
- Hair rendering as bold clump shapes with distinct "shine" highlight strokes, not blended specular
- Flat, saturated color fields — color does more emotional lifting since value contrast is intentionally simplified
From Structure to Design
Study targets
- Silhouette-driven character design — anime design leans harder on instant silhouette recognition than semi-realism does
- Archetype study: hair shape, eye shape, and outfit silhouette as fast character-identity signals
- Copy studies from 2–3 admired anime artists, focusing on their specific line and shading choices, not just subject matter
- From-imagination attempts, checked against your copy studies to diagnose where structure quietly reverted to semi-realism
Contrast Study: Anime → ARPG-Style
This one's less about proportion and more about rendering philosophy — the dial that moves most here is how form gets built, not how exaggerated it is.
- Pick 5–8 reference pairs — anime and ARPG/concept-art takes of a similar subject or archetype
- For each pair, ask: is structure still line-driven, or has it become value/light-driven? Did lighting go from flat and even to dramatic and directional? Did shading go from hard cel blocks to painterly blending with visible brush texture?
- Do 2–3 direct copy studies focused specifically on how the ARPG references handle a light source — this is the core skill this bridge is building toward
Portfolio Piece #3 — The Triptych, Completed
Same subject once more, now in ARPG-Style. Placed beside Pieces #1 and #2, this completes a triptych: one character, three deliberately different dial settings, proving range instead of just asserting it in a bio.
ARPG-Style
Concept-art / ArtStation-style rendering. Painterly, rendering-heavy, dramatically lit.
Note on the gauge: this is the one phase where the needle doesn't just keep sliding right. ARPG-style proportions are often closer to real anatomy than anime's are — heroic, sometimes idealized, but structurally grounded. What goes up sharply instead is rendering stylization: dramatic light, painterly edges, material storytelling. Treat this phase as "high on rendering, moderate on proportion," not simply "further along than Phase 3."
The "ARPG Dial Settings"
Compared to classic anime, ARPG-style typically:
- Pulls proportions back toward real anatomy — heroic and sometimes idealized, but grounded, not exaggerated the way anime is
- Makes rendering, not line, the primary carrier of form — value and light define shape far more than outline does
- Favors chunky, simplified forms at a glance, with rich material detail up close (armor edges, fabric wear, weapon damage)
- Uses lost-and-found edges — some edges crisp and deliberate, others allowed to melt into shadow or atmosphere
- Runs limited, controlled palettes with a small number of saturated accent pops rather than anime's broad flat-color fields
Rendering Technique
Study targets
- Block-in workflow: big value shapes first, detail refined only after the large read works
- Material rendering — differentiate metal, leather, cloth, and skin through edge quality and highlight behavior, not just color
- Directional and rim lighting for drama and depth, building on Phase 1's light-and-shadow fundamentals directly
- Painterly mark-making — visible, intentional brushwork instead of smooth blending, without losing structural clarity
From Reference to Design
Study targets
- Silhouette-first thumbnail workflow — multiple quick value thumbnails before committing to a final composition, directly extending Phase 1's thumbnailing habit
- Functional design thinking: what does this armor protect, how does this weapon work, what does this character's gear say about their story
- Copy studies from admired concept artists, focused on their value block-in stage specifically, not just the finished piece
- A full original concept piece from imagination, checked against reference for lighting and material believability
Past Phase 4
By the end of Phase 4 you should have three portfolio pieces of the same subject, deliberately rendered in three different styles — proof of range that a style-mix bio can't provide on its own. Any style beyond these three — painterly full realism, chibi, western comic inking, whatever's next — uses the exact same tool: a contrast study against whichever phase sits closest to it, isolating which dials move before you try to move them yourself.
